Allah is Ash-Shafi — The Healer
Only Allah Gives Shifa (Healing)
Prophet Ibrahim (AS) said: "And when I am ill, it is He who cures me." (Surah Ash-Shu'ara 26:80). Take medicine, but know that the cure comes only from Allah.
🏥
Reward for the Sick: The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no Muslim who is afflicted with a calamity — even the pricking of a thorn — except that Allah will expiate his sins because of it." (Bukhari). Illness is not punishment — it is purification and an elevation of rank for the believer who is patient.
Transliteration As'alullaha-l-'azima rabbal-'arshil-'azimi an yashfiyak
"I ask Allah the Mighty, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to cure you."
The Promise: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever visits a sick person who is not yet dying and says this 7 times, Allah will cure that person of their illness." (Abu Dawud, Sahih). Recite this exactly 7 times when sitting with someone who is ill.
Transliteration Allahumma rabban-nasi, adh-hibil-ba'sa wash-fi, anta-sh-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uk, shifaa'n la yughaddiru saqama
"O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal. You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing — a healing that leaves no illness behind."
How to use: The Prophet ﷺ would recite this dua, then blow over his hands, then wipe over his body. This is the standard Ruqyah for illness. Also recite Surah Al-Fatiha, Ayatul Kursi, and the Mu'awwidhatain over the sick person.
Transliteration Bismillah (×3). A'udhu bi'izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir (×7)
"In the name of Allah (×3). I seek refuge in Allah's might and power from the evil of what I feel and what I fear (×7)."
Method: Place your hand on the area of pain. Say "Bismillah" three times. Then recite the full dua seven times. This is the Prophet's ﷺ own Ruqyah for pain and has been practiced by Muslims for 1400+ years.

Sunnah of Visiting the Sick (Iyadatul Marid)
1
Go to visit the sick person — this carries 70,000 angels who make dua for you (Abu Dawud)
2
Sit near them, show care, and ask about their condition
3
Recite the 7-times dua (Dua #1 above) while seated with them
4
Give them glad tidings and remind them of Allah's mercy — do not speak of death
5
Make dua for them: "Shafa'akallah" (May Allah heal you)
6
Do not overstay — keep visits short so as not to tire the patient
The Islamic View on Illness and Healing
Islam takes a holistic approach to illness. The Prophet ﷺ commanded: "Seek medical treatment, O servants of Allah, for Allah has not created any disease except that He has also created its cure." (Abu Dawud, Sahih). This means a Muslim must combine dua with medicine — neither relying only on dua while ignoring doctors, nor relying only on medicine while neglecting Allah.
Can Surah Al-Fatiha Cure Illness?
Yes — this is authentically reported in a famous hadith. A group of Companions were on a journey and one of them recited Surah Al-Fatiha over a man who had been bitten by a scorpion, and he was cured. The Prophet ﷺ approved of this when informed, saying: "How did you know it is a Ruqyah?" (Bukhari). Al-Fatiha is called "Ash-Shifa'" (The Healing) by scholars for this reason.
