The Importance of Dua for Parents in Islam
In Islam, honoring and caring for one's parents holds an extraordinarily elevated position — Allah mentions it directly alongside the command to worship Him alone. In the Holy Quran, Allah says: "Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of contempt nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor." (Surah Al-Isra 17:23)
Rabbir Hamhuma — The Most Famous Dua for Parents
The Quranic verse Rabbir hamhuma kama rabbayani saghira (Surah Al-Isra 17:24) is the most well-known and comprehensive dua for parents. It asks Allah to shower them with mercy, and beautifully reminds us that the reason we ask for this mercy is because they sacrificed so much raising us from infancy. Scholars recommend reciting this dua after every prayer.
Can You Make Dua for Non-Muslim Parents?
This is a common and important question. According to the majority of scholars, it is not permissible to make dua for forgiveness for deceased parents who died as non-Muslims. However, you CAN make dua for their guidance if they are still alive, and you CAN make dua that Allah protects you and gives you the tawfiq (ability) to serve them well in this world.
How to Make Your Dua Accepted
Face the Qiblah and begin with praise of Allah and Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ.
Raise your hands and make dua with full concentration and sincerity (Ikhlas).
Be persistent — do not give up. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah loves those who are persistent in dua."
Give Sadaqah before making dua — charity is one of the greatest means of dua acceptance.
