Rain is a Mercy from Allah
Rainfall is a Special Time for Dua
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Two duas are not rejected: dua at the time of the call to prayer (Adhan) and dua at the time of rainfall." — Abu Dawud (Hasan)
☔
Special Time: When it rains, make as many personal duas as possible for yourself, your family, and your needs. The Prophet ﷺ explicitly said rain time is one of the most accepted times for dua. Do not just watch the rain — open your hands and ask Allah!
Dua #1 — When It Starts Raining
Sahih Bukhari 1032
اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا
Transliteration Allahumma sayyiban nafi'a
"O Allah, [make it] a beneficial downpour."
This is the shortest and most authentic dua for rain. Recite it as soon as the first drops fall. "Sayyib" means heavy beneficial rain and "nafi'" means beneficial — asking Allah to make it a blessing, not a disaster.
Transliteration Allahumma hawalayna wa la 'alayna. Allahumma 'alal-akami waz-zirabi wa butunul-awdiyati wa manabitis-shajar
"O Allah, let it rain around us and not on us. O Allah, let it rain on the hills, mountains, valley floors, and places where trees grow."
The Prophet ﷺ recited this during a Friday Khutbah when a man complained of drought — it immediately rained. The following Friday another man asked for it to stop — the Prophet ﷺ recited this dua and the clouds parted. (Bukhari)
Dua #3 — After Rain Stops (Gratitude)
Sahih Bukhari 846
مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ
Transliteration Mutirna bi fadlillahi wa rahmatih
"We have been given rain by the grace of Allah and His mercy."
The Prophet ﷺ warned that saying "We were given rain by such-and-such star" is a form of disbelief (kufr in the blessing). A Muslim attributes all rain to Allah's grace and mercy, not to weather patterns or stars.

What is Salatul Istisqa?
Salatul Istisqa is the Islamic Prayer for Rain — a special congregational prayer performed outside (in an open field) when a region is suffering from drought. The Imam leads the community in 2 rak'ahs with loud recitation, followed by a Khutbah where the Imam reverses his cloak (as the Prophet ﷺ did) as a symbolic gesture asking Allah to "turn" the situation around.
Why Does Islam Have a Prayer Specifically for Rain?
Because rain in Islamic theology is not a random meteorological event — it is a direct expression of Allah's mercy and a test of the community's faith. When rain stops, it may be a sign that a community needs to collectively repent and turn to Allah. Salatul Istisqa is therefore a collective act of tawbah (repentance) and reliance on Allah.
