Women's FiqhCrucial Rules of Nifas
The 40-Day Rule
Umm Salamah (RA) said: "During the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, the woman experiencing postpartum bleeding would refrain from praying for 40 days." (Tirmidhi). The vast majority of scholars agree that 40 days is the maximum limit for Nifas.
What if bleeding stops BEFORE 40 days?
There is no minimum duration for Nifas. If your bleeding stops and you see clear discharge on day 10, day 20, or day 35, your Nifas is officially over. You must perform Ghusl and resume praying and fasting immediately. You do not wait until 40 days if the bleeding has stopped.
What if bleeding continues AFTER 40 days?
If bleeding continues past the 40-day mark calculated above, the extra bleeding is classified as Istihadha (irregular bleeding). You must:
- Take a Ghusl immediately at the 40-day mark.
- Resume all obligatory prayers and fasting.
- Perform a fresh Wudu for every single prayer time after washing the area, even if you are actively bleeding.
