A Divine Right of the Child

Islam highly encourages breastfeeding as it provides immense physical immunity for the child and a deep emotional bond with the mother.

وَالْوَالِدَاتُ يُرْضِعْنَ أَوْلَادَهُنَّ حَوْلَيْنِ كَامِلَيْنِ لِمَنْ أَرَادَ أَن يُتِمَّ الرَّضَاعَةَ
"Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing [period]." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:233)

Fiqh & Rulings on Breastfeeding

Mutual Consent for Weaning

The Quran states that if parents wish to wean the child before the two years, they may do so by mutual consent and consultation. The 2 years is a recommended maximum, not an absolute obligation.

Milk Kinship (Mahram)

If a woman breastfeeds a child who is not her own (wet-nursing) at least 5 satisfying times before the child turns 2 years old, a "milk kinship" is established. The child becomes her Mahram, just like a blood child.

Formula & Alternatives

If a mother is unable to breastfeed due to health reasons or lack of milk supply, there is no sin upon her. She can use formula or a wet nurse. "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear." (2:233)

The Father's Duty

The father is financially responsible for providing food and clothing for the nursing mother in a reasonable manner. If they are divorced, he must compensate her for nursing his child.
