The Rulings of Aqiqah

Number of Animals

According to the Sunnah, two sheep or goats are sacrificed for a baby boy, and one is sacrificed for a baby girl. If one cannot afford two for a boy, one is permissible and fulfills the Sunnah.

Shaving the Head

On the 7th day, it is Sunnah to shave the baby's head and give the weight of the hair in silver (or its equivalent value in money) to charity.

Naming the Child

The 7th day is the officially recommended day to finalize and declare the name of the child, although naming them on the 1st day is also authentically reported.

What if I missed it?

If you missed the 7th day, the Prophet ﷺ recommended the 14th. If you missed that, then the 21st. If the parents were unable to do it entirely, a person can even perform their own Aqiqah when they become an adult.
