The Wisdom Behind the Manners

The Right Hand

The Prophet ﷺ strongly warned against eating or drinking with the left hand, stating that Shaytan (Satan) eats and drinks with his left hand. The right hand is honored for eating, while the left is used for personal hygiene.

Drinking in Three Breaths

When drinking water, the Sunnah is to sit down, sip the water, pull the cup away to breathe, and repeat three times. The Prophet ﷺ said: "It is more thirst-quenching, healthier, and more wholesome."

Never Criticizing Food

Abu Huraira reported: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never criticized any food. If he liked it, he would eat it, and if he did not like it, he would leave it." This teaches profound gratitude and respect for provision.

The Rule of Thirds

To avoid gluttony and maintain health, the Prophet ﷺ advised filling the stomach with: one-third food, one-third liquid, and leaving one-third empty for breathing.
