The Wisdom Behind the Routine

Sleeping in a State of Wudu

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whenever you go to bed, perform Wudu as you do for prayer." If a person sleeps in a state of Wudu, an angel stays in their bed and prays for their forgiveness all night.

Surah Al-Mulk (Chapter 67)

The Prophet ﷺ would never sleep until he had recited Surah Al-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk. It is specifically mentioned that Surah Al-Mulk intercedes for its companion and protects from the punishment of the grave.

Cupping Hands for the 3 Quls

Before sleeping, the Prophet ﷺ would cup his hands together, blow into them lightly, and recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas. Then he would wipe his hands over whatever he could reach of his body, starting with his head and face.

Sleeping on the Right Side

Scientific studies have shown that sleeping on the right side puts less pressure on the heart and aids in digestion. The Prophet ﷺ specifically commanded his companions to lay on their right side.
