 Sleep is the Minor Death

Every Night is a Gift — Wake Up is a Mercy

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When any one of you goes to sleep, Shaytan ties three knots at the back of his neck." These adhkar and duas untie those knots.

🌙

Why Bedtime Adhkar Matter: The Prophet ﷺ was meticulous about bedtime routines. He instructed us to: dust the bed 3 times, sleep on the right side, face the Qiblah, and recite the adhkar. These acts provide protection for the entire night — 8+ hours of spiritual shield from a few minutes of dhikr.

Dua #1 — The Main Sleeping Dua

Sahih Bukhari 6312
اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Transliteration Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya
"O Allah, in Your name I die and I live."
Why "I die"? Sleep is called the "minor death" in Islam — you surrender your soul to Allah every night. Saying this dua is a reminder of your mortality and complete dependence on Allah. The waking dua is the opposite: "Alhamdulillahil-ladhi ahyana..."

Dua #2 — The Protection Dua Before Sleep

Sahih Bukhari 6320
اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ
Transliteration Allahumma qini 'adhabaka yawma tab'athu 'ibadak
"O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the day You resurrect Your servants."
The Prophet ﷺ would hold his right cheek and recite this dua three times before sleeping. It is a profound reminder — the last thought before sleep being the Day of Judgment — keeping the heart attached to the Akhirah.

Dua #3 — Tasbih of Fatima (Before Sleeping)

Sahih Bukhari 3705
سُبْحَانَ اللهِ (33×) ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ (33×) ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ (34×)
Transliteration Subhanallah ×33  |  Alhamdulillah ×33  |  Allahu Akbar ×34
SubhanAllah (33 times) + Alhamdulillah (33 times) + Allahu Akbar (34 times) = 100 total.
Story: Fatima (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ for a servant to help her with the hard work. He replied: "Shall I not tell you of something better than a servant? Say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times before sleeping." He said this is better for you than a servant.

The Islamic Understanding of Sleep

The Quran describes sleep as a form of death: "It is Allah who takes away the souls at the time of their death, and those that have not died during their sleep." (Surah Az-Zumar 39:42). Every night when you sleep, your soul is taken by Allah — and every morning you wake up is a fresh mercy and gift from Allah. This is why waking up should begin with "Alhamdulillah" — praise and gratitude.

Why Recite the Three Quls Before Sleeping?

Aisha (RA) narrated that every night before sleeping, the Prophet ﷺ would cup his hands, blow into them, recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas, then wipe over his body starting from his head, face, and the front of his body — doing this three times. (Bukhari). These three surahs together provide protection from all evil: from the unseen (Ikhlas), from external harms (Falaq), and from internal whispers (Nas).
