Why Wudu is the Key to Prayer
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The key to Salah is purity (Taharah), its beginning is Takbir and its ending is Tasleem." (Abu Dawud). Wudu is not just a physical act — it is a spiritual preparation. Each limb washed during Wudu becomes purified of sins, as the Prophet ﷺ described in detail in Sahih Muslim.
Does Wudu Break Automatically?
Yes, certain actions break (nullify) the Wudu, requiring you to repeat it before praying. These include: passing wind, answering the call of nature, deep sleep, losing consciousness, and bleeding heavily (according to some madhabs). Once Wudu is broken, this dua no longer applies until you perform a fresh Wudu.
The 8 Gates of Paradise
One of the most profound rewards in the Hadith is that this dua after Wudu opens all eight gates of Paradise for the believer. This means you have maximum choice — you may enter from whichever gate you desire. This is mentioned in Sahih Muslim (Hadith 234) and is considered a highly authentic promise from the Prophet ﷺ.
