Because Zamzam responds to the intention of the drinker, the scholars formulated a specific etiquette to maximize its blessings.
Face the Qibla
Turn yourself to face the Kaaba in Mecca, as you would for prayer, before bringing the cup to your lips.
Say Bismillah
Always start by mentioning the Name of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said to drink it in three separate breaths, removing the cup from the mouth each time.
Make a Powerful Dua
This is the critical step. Ask Allah for healing, knowledge, wealth, or forgiveness. The classic Dua is: "O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and a cure from every illness."
Drink to Your Fill
Unlike normal water, it is Sunnah to drink Zamzam until your ribs are full. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The difference between us and the hypocrites is that they do not drink their fill of Zamzam."
History & Facts
The Origin (Hajar)
Zamzam originated when Hajar (AS), the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), was left in the barren desert with baby Ismail. After she ran between Safa and Marwa 7 times looking for water, the Angel Jibril struck the earth, and the spring burst forth.
Cannot Spoil
Zamzam water does not contain biological growth like algae or bacteria that normally spoil standing water. It has an unusually high concentration of calcium and magnesium salts.
Standing vs Sitting
While the general Sunnah is to sit while drinking water, there is an exception for Zamzam. The Prophet ﷺ was seen drinking Zamzam while standing up, so both sitting and standing are acceptable.
