Olive Oil (Zaytoun) Uses
Explore the blessings of the Olive Tree, famously referred to in the Quran as the "Blessed Tree" (Shajaratin Mubaraka).
Prophetic DietProphetic Sunnahs of Olive Oil
Eating (Dietary)
The Prophet ﷺ explicitly commanded us to eat it. It was a staple of the Prophetic diet. Modern science confirms extra virgin olive oil is loaded with antioxidants and is the healthiest fat on earth, preventing heart disease.
Anointing the Body
"Anoint yourselves with it." The companions would massage olive oil into their skin and hair. It acts as a deep moisturizer, heals dry skin, and protects against the harsh desert sun.
Ruqyah (Spiritual Healing)
Because it comes from a "blessed tree," scholars of Ruqyah heavily use olive oil. The Quran is recited over the oil, which is then massaged onto areas of the body suffering from pain, evil eye, or black magic.
Lighting Lamps
Historically, olive oil was the cleanest, brightest-burning fuel for lamps in the mosques. It burns pure without producing heavy soot, reflecting the Quranic metaphor of divine light.
Important Notes on Olive Oil
Extra Virgin
To get the health benefits, the oil must be "Extra Virgin" and cold-pressed. This means the olives were pressed mechanically without heat or chemicals, preserving all the antioxidants and vitamins.
Cooking with it
While excellent for dipping bread or pouring over salads, heating extra virgin olive oil to very high temperatures (deep frying) can destroy its beneficial compounds. It is best consumed raw or lightly heated.
Palestinian Olives
The olive trees of the Levant (Sham), specifically Palestine, are renowned worldwide. The land itself is described as "blessed" in the Quran, adding layers of spiritual significance to its agriculture.
