Taking the Blessed Water Home

To prevent luggage flooding and smuggling, Saudi aviation authorities strictly regulate how Zamzam is packed and transported on international flights.

The Visa Rule (Crucial)

Only passengers traveling on an official Hajj Visa or Umrah Visa are guaranteed the right to take the 5-liter Zamzam box on their flight.

If you are traveling on a standard Tourist Visa, Business Visa, or Transit Visa, many airlines (including Saudia) will not allow you to check in the Zamzam box. Check with your specific airline before purchasing.

The Core Rules

Official Bottles Only

You cannot fill your own plastic bottles or jerry cans with Zamzam from the Haram and check them in. Airlines will only accept the official, factory-sealed 5-liter bottles produced by the King Abdullah Zamzam Water Project.

5 Liters Per Person

The maximum allowance is exactly one 5-liter box per passenger. You cannot pay for extra luggage to take more boxes.

Not Inside Luggage

You must not place any liquids, including small Zamzam bottles, inside your checked luggage. If customs scanners detect liquids, your suitcase may be opened, the water confiscated, and your bag delayed.

Separate Check-in

The 5-liter Zamzam box is checked in separately from your normal suitcases. It usually does not count towards your standard baggage weight allowance (free of charge), but this depends on the airline.

How to Purchase at the Airport (Jeddah/Madinah)

1

Locate the Kiosk outside the Terminal

Do not go inside the terminal yet. The official Zamzam selling points are located outside the main departure halls at both Jeddah (KAIA) and Madinah airports.

2

Show your Passport/App

Present your passport or the Nusuk app to verify your Umrah/Hajj visa status. You can buy one box per passport.

3

Pay the Fee

The official price for the 5-liter box (which comes pre-packed in thick plastic and a sturdy cardboard box) is roughly 8 to 10 SAR. Cards are accepted.

4

Dedicated Zamzam Belt

Take the box inside the terminal. At the check-in counters, you will usually be directed to a separate, dedicated "Zamzam Check-in Belt" to drop off your water.
