Why are they called "White Days"? Ayyam al-Bidh literally translates to "The White Days." They are named this because they coincide with the full moon — the nights when the moon is perfectly full, illuminating the earth with white light throughout the entire night.
The Mathematics of the Reward
Every good deed in Islam is multiplied by ten. Therefore, fasting 3 days x 10 = 30 days. By fasting just three days each month, it is as if you have fasted the entire month. If done every month, it is as if you fasted your entire life!
Physical & Spiritual Health
Modern science confirms the benefits of intermittent fasting, including cellular repair (autophagy). Furthermore, some studies suggest human moods are affected by full moons — fasting during these days helps maintain patience, spirituality, and emotional control.
The Niyyah (Intention) for White Days Fasting
Like any voluntary fast (Sunnah or Nafl), the intention for fasting the White Days can be made at any point during the night or even in the morning after Fajr — provided you have not eaten or drunk anything since the Adhan of Fajr. It is enough to simply have the intention in your heart: "I intend to fast tomorrow for the sake of Allah to observe the Sunnah of Ayyam al-Bidh."
Can I Miss a Day?
Yes. Because these are voluntary (Nafl) fasts, if you break your fast or only fast one or two of the days, there is no sin upon you. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged fasting three days of the month, and while the 13th, 14th, and 15th are best, fasting ANY three days of the month still achieves the reward of fasting the whole month.
