Suhoor — The Blessed Pre-Dawn Meal

Eat Suhoor — There is Barakah in It

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Eat Suhoor for in Suhoor there is barakah (blessing)." — Sahih Bukhari 1923

🌙

Don't Skip Suhoor! The Prophet ﷺ also said: "The difference between our fasting and the fasting of the People of the Book is the eating of Suhoor." (Sahih Muslim 1096). Eating Suhoor is a Sunnah that distinguishes the Muslim fast and provides barakah for the entire fasting day — even if you only eat a few dates or drink water.

 Niyyah (Intention) for Fasting

Islamic Jurisprudence
وَبِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ
Transliteration Wa bisawmi ghadin nawaytu min shahri Ramadan
"I intend to fast tomorrow in the month of Ramadan."
Important Fiqh Point: The niyyah (intention) for Ramadan fasting must be made before Fajr each night. Most scholars hold that it is sufficient to make the intention in your heart — saying it verbally is not required. However, saying it verbally helps keep the heart focused. Make this niyyah at Suhoor time.

 Dua Before Eating Suhoor (Bismillah)

Sahih Bukhari | Sunnah
بِسْمِ اللهِ وَعَلَى بَرَكَةِ اللهِ
Transliteration Bismillahi wa 'ala barakatillah
"In the name of Allah and with the blessings of Allah."
Say Bismillah before every meal — including Suhoor. If you forget at the start, say: "Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirah" (In the name of Allah at its beginning and end). This keeps Shaytan away from partaking in your food.

Dua at Suhoor Time (Last Third of Night)

Sahih Bukhari 1145
هَلْ مِنْ مُسْتَغْفِرٍ فَأَغْفِرَ لَهُ، هَلْ مِنْ دَاعٍ فَأَسْتَجِيبَ لَهُ
Transliteration [Allah says:] "Hal min mustaghfirin fa-aghfira lahu, hal min da'in fa-astajiba lah"
"Is there anyone seeking forgiveness that I may forgive him? Is there anyone making dua that I may respond to him?"
The Golden Hour: Suhoor time = the last third of the night = Allah descends to the lowest heaven and calls out to His servants. This is THE most accepted time for dua in the entire day/night cycle. Wake up early, eat Suhoor slowly, and make abundant personal duas before Fajr.

The Fiqh of Suhoor — Key Rules

Suhoor is a confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah Mu'akkadah) — highly recommended but not obligatory. The key time for Suhoor is between midnight and the Fajr Adhan. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged delaying Suhoor close to Fajr time to maximize the blessing of the pre-dawn hour. It is permissible to continue eating until the exact moment the Fajr Adhan begins.

Can You Fast Without Suhoor?

Yes — the fast is valid even without Suhoor, provided the intention was made before Fajr. However, you would be missing an important Sunnah and its barakah. The Prophet ﷺ specifically commanded: "Eat Suhoor — even if it is just a sip of water." This shows the immense value of even the smallest Suhoor.
