The Month of Preparation

The Prophet ﷺ used to fast abundantly in Sha'ban, saying: "It is a month between Rajab and Ramadan that people neglect."

The Forgiveness of Mid-Sha'ban: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah looks at His creation on the night of the middle of Sha'ban and He forgives all His creation except for a polytheist (mushrik) or one who harbors enmity (mushahin)." (Sunan Ibn Majah). Therefore, the best preparation is to clear your heart of grudges against fellow Muslims!

Preparation for Ramadan

When the month of Rajab entered, the Prophet ﷺ would make this beautiful Dua, which is highly recommended to recite throughout Sha'ban as well:

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي رَجَبٍ وَشَعْبَانَ وَبَلِّغْنَا رَمَضَانَ
"Allahumma barik lana fi Rajab wa Sha'ban wa ballighna Ramadan."
"O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Sha'ban, and allow us to reach Ramadan."

What is Shab-e-Barat?

In South Asian cultures, the 15th night of Sha'ban is often referred to as "Shab-e-Barat" (The Night of Deliverance). In Arabic, it is known as Laylat al-Bara'ah. While there are authentic Hadith stating that Allah grants widespread forgiveness on this night, Islamic scholars emphasize that there are no specific, prescribed congregational prayers or rituals for this night in the authentic Sunnah.

The Sunnah of Fasting in Sha'ban

Aisha (RA) reported: "I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasting for a whole month except the month of Ramadan, and I did not see him fasting in any month more than in the month of Sha'ban." (Sahih Bukhari). Fasting in this month is a warm-up for the physical and spiritual marathon of Ramadan.
