"Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs." (Surah Al-Isra, 17:1)
1. Al-Isra (The Night Journey)
The Prophet ๏ทบ traveled on the winged creature Buraq from the Kaaba in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem. There, he led all the previous Prophets in prayer.
2. Al-Mi'raj (The Ascension)
He ascended through the seven heavens, meeting different Prophets at each level, until he reached Sidrat al-Muntaha (The Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary) and spoke directly to Allah ๏ทป.
The Gift of Salah: During the Mi'raj, Allah ๏ทป initially prescribed 50 daily prayers for the Muslim Ummah. Upon the advice of Prophet Musa (AS), Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ repeatedly asked Allah to reduce the number. It was reduced to 5 daily prayers, but with the massive reward of 50! Salah is the ultimate gift of this miraculous night.
What is Shab-e-Meraj?
In South Asia and other parts of the world, the 27th of Rajab is celebrated as "Shab-e-Meraj" (The Night of Ascension). Historically, this event took place during a period known as the Year of Sorrow, after the Prophet ๏ทบ had lost his beloved wife Khadijah (RA) and his protective uncle Abu Talib. The journey was a divine comfort and honor bestowed upon him.
How to Observe the 27th of Rajab
While there are no specific congregational prayers authenticated in the Sunnah exclusively for this night, Muslims use the 27th of Rajab to reflect on the miracle, read Surah Al-Isra, and renew their commitment to the 5 daily prayersโthe very gift given on this night.
