A Period of Transition

The Iddah is a divine commandment meant to ascertain the absence of pregnancy, allow time for reconciliation in revocable divorce, and honor the sanctity of marriage.

Iddah Ends On:
--
--
"And those of you who die and leave wives behind - they, [the wives, shall] wait four months and ten [days]." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:234)

Understanding the Durations

Death of Husband (Widow)

The Iddah is precisely 4 lunar months and 10 days (approximately 130 days). During this time, she mourns her husband, avoids beautifying herself, and stays in the home they shared (with exceptions for necessities).

Divorce (Menstruating)

The Iddah is 3 Quru' (three complete menstrual cycles). Because this relies on biological cycles rather than calendar dates, the calculator provides a rough estimate of 3 lunar months (approx. 89 days), but the true Iddah ends after the third cycle is complete.

Divorce (No Menses)

For women who are post-menopausal or who do not menstruate, the Iddah is strictly 3 lunar months (approximately 89 days).

Pregnancy

Whether divorced or widowed, if a woman is pregnant, her Iddah overrides all other timelines. It ends entirely the moment she delivers the child, even if she delivers just hours after the divorce or her husband's passing.
