Tawaf Al-Wida (Farewell Tawaf)
The final obligatory rite before departing the holy city of Makkah. Understand the timing, rulings, and exemptions.
Fiqh & RitualsThe Sequence of Departure
1. Pack Your Bags
Before heading to the Haram for the Farewell Tawaf, you should have all your packing completed, your hotel checkout finalized, and your transport ready.
2. Perform Tawaf
Go to the Masjid al-Haram and perform 7 circuits around the Kaaba. Like a normal Tawaf, pray 2 rakahs behind Maqam Ibrahim afterward. There is no Sa'i after Tawaf Al-Wida.
3. Immediate Departure
After completing the Tawaf, you must leave Makkah immediately. You cannot stay in the city to sleep, shop, or visit friends. Buying quick snacks for the road is permissible.
Important Rulings
Is it for Hajj or Umrah?
For Hajj: It is unanimously Wajib (obligatory). Leaving Makkah without doing it requires a penalty (Dam/Sacrifice).
For Umrah: There is a difference of opinion. The majority of scholars consider it Mustahabb (highly recommended) for Umrah, but not Wajib. However, if your Umrah is during the Hajj season, strict rules may apply.
Delaying Departure
If you perform Tawaf Al-Wida and then your bus breaks down, or your flight is delayed causing you to sleep in Makkah again, the previous Tawaf is voided. You must perform the Farewell Tawaf again right before you actually leave.
Buying & Selling
You should not engage in commerce after the Farewell Tawaf. If you realize you forgot to buy a souvenir, and you go shopping after the Tawaf, you must perform the Tawaf again.
Exemption for Women (Menstruation)
The only people entirely exempt from Tawaf Al-Wida without penalty are women experiencing menstruation (Haidh) or postnatal bleeding (Nifas) at the time of departure.
If a woman's group is leaving Makkah and she is menstruating, she simply departs with them. She does not need to perform the Tawaf, she does not need to wait until she is pure (unless she missed the core Tawaf Al-Ifadah), and she does not owe a penalty sacrifice.
