Hilal — The Islamic New Month

Every New Month is a New Beginning

The Prophet ﷺ taught us to greet each new crescent moon with a special dua — turning every new lunar month into an act of worship.

🌙

Why This Dua Matters: The Islamic calendar is entirely lunar — every single month, Ramadan, Hajj, Eid, fasting — everything is tied to the crescent moon. By reciting this dua at every new moon, you are spiritually connected to this divine timekeeping system 12 times a year.

The Main Dua for Sighting the New Moon

At-Tirmidhi 3451 | Hasan
Transliteration Allahu akbar. Allahumma ahillahu 'alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, wat-tawfiqi lima tuhibbu wa tarda. Rabbuna wa rabbukallah.
Meaning: "Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, let this moon appear over us with security, faith, safety, and Islam, and with the ability to do what You love and are pleased with. Our Lord and your Lord is Allah."
Key phrase: "Rabbuna wa rabbukallah" (Our Lord and your Lord is Allah) — this phrase acknowledges that the moon itself is a creation and servant of Allah, not something to be worshipped, firmly rooting the dua in Tawhid.

Additional Dua When Seeing the Moon

Abu Dawud 5092 | Sahih
Transliteration Hilalu khayrin wa rushd (×3). Amantu billladhi khalaqak.
Meaning: "A crescent of goodness and guidance (×3). I believe in the One who created you."
Note: This dua should be recited three times while facing the crescent moon. The repetition of "hilalu khayrin wa rushd" three times is a Sunnah emphasis on asking for goodness and guidance throughout the entire new month.

Why the Moon is Central to Islam

Allah ﷻ says: "They ask you about the new moons. Say: They are measurements of time for the people and for Hajj." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:189). The crescent moon (Hilal) is not just a symbol of Islam — it is the divine system by which all Islamic obligations are calculated: Ramadan fasting, Eid, Hajj, Zakat year, Iddah, and more.

When Do You Recite the Moon Dua?

You recite this dua as soon as you visually sight the new crescent moon with your naked eye after sunset on the 29th of the Islamic month. You should face the moon when reciting. If you are indoors and someone tells you the moon has been sighted, you can still recite the dua with the moon's general direction in mind.
