About the Tahajjud Time Calculator

The Tahajjud Time Calculator is designed to help Muslims accurately determine the most blessed portion of the night—the last third. Tahajjud (the night prayer) is highly recommended and holds immense spiritual reward.

What is the Last Third of the Night?

In Islam, the night begins precisely at Maghrib (sunset) and ends at Fajr (dawn). The "last third of the night" is calculated by finding the total duration between Maghrib and Fajr, dividing it by three, and subtracting that one-third duration from the Fajr time.

For example, if Maghrib is at 6:00 PM and Fajr is at 6:00 AM, the total night duration is 12 hours. One-third of 12 hours is 4 hours. The last third would begin 4 hours before Fajr, which is exactly at 2:00 AM.

Why is the Last Third Important?

The last third of the night is the most sacred time for making Dua (supplication) and performing Salah (prayer). According to a famous Hadith recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim:

"Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: 'Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?'"

What is Islamic Midnight?

Islamic Midnight is the exact midpoint between Maghrib and Fajr. It does not necessarily fall at 12:00 AM on the clock. It is important because, according to many scholars, the time for Isha prayer ends at Islamic Midnight. You can use our calculator to easily find this exact time.

How to Perform Tahajjud

  1. Intention: Make the intention (niyyah) to pray Tahajjud before going to sleep.
  2. Sleep: It is Sunnah to sleep after Isha and wake up specifically for Tahajjud.
  3. Wudu: Wake up in the last third of the night and perform Wudu (ablution).
  4. Rak'ahs: Pray in units of two rak'ahs. You can pray anywhere from 2 to 8 rak'ahs (or more), followed by Witr prayer.

Use this tool daily to ensure you catch these blessed hours, especially during Ramadan or when seeking answers to your most important duas.
