The Obligation of Hady

Pilgrims performing Hajj Al-Tamattu' or Hajj Al-Qiran are Islamically obligated to offer an animal sacrifice in Mecca as an expression of gratitude.

Who Must Sacrifice?

If you are performing Hajj Al-Tamattu' (Umrah first, then Hajj) or Hajj Al-Qiran (Umrah and Hajj combined in one Ihram), the Hady is mandatory. If you are doing Hajj Al-Ifrad (Hajj only, no Umrah), it is highly recommended but not mandatory.

When is it Done?

The sacrifice must be performed on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah (Yawm An-Nahr), after you have stoned the Large Jamarat (Aqabah), or during the 11th, 12th, or 13th of Dhul Hijjah.

Cutting Hair (Halq/Taqsir)

You cannot cut or shave your hair to exit Ihram until you are sure your animal has been sacrificed. If you bought an Adahi voucher, your group leader will inform you when the sacrifice is complete.

Sequence of Events on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah

1
Rami (Stoning): Throw 7 pebbles at the Large Jamarat.
2
Nahr (Sacrifice): The animal is sacrificed (usually handled by the Adahi project via voucher).
3
Halq (Shaving): Men shave their heads completely, women trim a fingertip's length. (You are now partially out of Ihram).
4
Tawaf Al-Ifadah: Go to Mecca to perform Tawaf and Sa'i. (You are now fully out of Ihram).

The Adahi Project (Islamic Development Bank)

Millions of animals cannot be physically slaughtered by pilgrims themselves anymore. The Saudi Government set up the Adahi project. You purchase a voucher (online or via kiosks), and they slaughter the animal on your behalf, freeze the meat, and distribute it to the poor in 27 different countries.

*Never buy vouchers from street vendors. Only use official Adahi kiosks or your verified Hajj group operator.
