"More beautiful than the full moon."

A companion once looked at the full moon, then at the Prophet ﷺ, and said: "He was, in my eyes, more beautiful than the moon."

His Radiant Face

His face was luminous and slightly rounded, glowing like the full moon. When he was pleased, his face would light up so brightly it resembled a piece of the moon.

"His face shone like the full moon." (Hind bin Abi Hala)

His Height & Build

He was of medium stature—neither noticeably tall nor noticeably short. However, miraculously, when he walked next to a tall person, he appeared taller than them. He had a broad chest and broad shoulders.

"He was of average height, yet he commanded presence." (Anas bin Malik)

His Eyes

His eyes were large, beautiful, and pitch-black in the iris, with brilliant white sclera. His eyelashes were naturally long and thick, making it appear as though he wore kohl even when he didn't.

"He had intensely black eyes and long eyelashes." (Ali bin Abi Talib)

His Hair & Beard

His hair was neither extremely curly nor completely straight, but slightly wavy. It reached his earlobes or shoulders. His beard was thick, full, and majestic, covering his chest. He passed away with barely 20 white hairs in his beard and head.

"His hair was wavy, not overly curly nor straight." (Bara bin Azib)

His Perspiration

His sweat looked like pearls on his face. Miraculously, his sweat possessed a natural fragrance sweeter than musk. Companions would sometimes collect his sweat to mix with their perfumes.

"I have never smelled amber or musk sweeter than the scent of the Messenger of Allah." (Anas bin Malik)

The Seal of Prophethood

Between his shoulders lay the Seal of Prophethood—a raised patch of flesh, slightly reddish, the size of a pigeon's egg, surrounded by moles. This was the physical sign of the final Prophet mentioned in previous scriptures.

"I saw the Seal between his shoulders; it was like a red tumor." (Jabir bin Samurah)
مَا رَأَيْتُ شَيْئًا أَحْسَنَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَأَنَّ الشَّمْسَ تَجْرِي فِي وَجْهِهِ
"I did not see anyone more handsome than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It was as if the sun was shining in his face." (Abu Hurairah - Tirmidhi)

What is the "Shama'il"?

The Book of Shama'il

The term "Shama'il" refers to the appearance, characteristics, and manners of the Prophet ﷺ. The most famous collection is "Ash-Shama'il Al-Muhammadiyah" compiled by the great scholar Imam At-Tirmidhi (9th century).

Why study it?

To love someone, you must know them. Studying the Prophet's ﷺ appearance and gentle nature increases our love for him, which in turn strengthens our faith, as loving him more than ourselves is a condition of Iman.

Seeing Him in Dreams

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever sees me in a dream has truly seen me, for Satan cannot assume my form." Knowing his physical description helps a believer verify if the person they saw in a dream was indeed the Prophet ﷺ.
