Fitness Guidelines for Muslims
Modest Activewear
For Men: Shorts must fall below the knee to cover the Awrah. Avoid skin-tight compression pants without loose shorts worn over them.
For Women: Look for longline sports tops (tunics) that cover the glutes, loose jogger sweatpants, and specialized sports hijabs that do not require pins and manage sweat efficiently.
The Gym Environment
Mixed (co-ed) gyms present significant challenges for lowering the gaze and avoiding free-mixing. The ideal solution is a gender-segregated gym or women's only fitness hours. If that's unavailable, consider investing in a home gym setup or calisthenics in nature.
Avoiding Gym Music
Commercial gyms blast loud music which is impermissible. To counter this, wear high-quality noise-canceling earbuds. Listen to the Quran, Islamic lectures, or Nashids while working out to stay spiritually connected.
Swimming Rules
Swimming is highly encouraged in Islam, but public mixed pools are generally forbidden due to exposed Awrah. Seek out private pools, women-only swimming hours, or wear full-body modest swimwear (Burkini) if swimming in remote natural locations.
