Islamic Clothing & Size Guide
Understand the Fiqh of modesty (Awrah) and learn how to accurately measure yourself for Abayas and Thobes.
Fashion & ModestyThe Awrah of Men
A man's Awrah (the area that must be covered in front of others) is from the navel to the knee. However, true Islamic modesty requires dressing with dignity, especially for prayer.
- Must be loose enough not to reveal the shape of the private areas.
- Should not be transparent.
- Silk and gold are strictly forbidden for men.
- Should not fall below the ankles (Isbal).
The Awrah of Women
A woman's Awrah in front of non-Mahram men is her entire body except for her face and hands. (Some scholars also include the face/niqab).
- Must be thick enough to conceal the color of the skin.
- Must be loose enough to conceal the shape/curves of the body.
- Should not be scented with perfume when going outside.
- Should not resemble men's clothing.
How to Measure for Online Shopping
Islamic clothing like Thobes and Abayas are sized by length, not by S/M/L width.
For Women (Abaya / Jilbab)
Length (The Size): Measure from the top of your shoulder down to your heel. If the measurement is 54 inches, your Abaya size is 54.
Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest. Since an Abaya should be loose, add 3-4 inches to your actual bust size when checking the size chart.
Sleeves: Measure from the edge of your shoulder to your wrist bone.
For Men (Thobe / Jubbah)
Length (The Size): Measure from the highest point of your shoulder down to just above your ankle. If it's 58 inches, your size is 58.
Chest (Width): Measure around the widest part of your chest. Thobes usually have width codes (like 58M, 58L, 58XL).
Collar: Leave two fingers of space between the measuring tape and your neck for comfortable buttoning.
