"He who believes in Allah and the Last Day..."

The Prophet ﷺ inextricably linked the way we treat our neighbors directly to our belief in Allah and the Day of Judgment.

"Jibril kept recommending me to treat neighbors with kindness until I thought he would assign them a share of inheritance."
SAHIH BUKHARI 6014
"Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbor."
SAHIH BUKHARI 6018
"By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe!... The one whose neighbor is not safe from his evil conduct."
SAHIH BUKHARI 6016
"He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while his neighbor goes hungry."
SUNAN AL-KUBRA 19049
"When you cook a stew, put plenty of water in it, then look to the families of your neighbors and give them some of it."
SAHIH MUSLIM 2625
"The best of companions with Allah is the one who is best to his companion, and the best of neighbors to Allah is the one who is the best to his neighbor."
TIRMIDHI 1944

Who is Your Neighbor?

The Range of Neighbors

According to classical scholars, the definition of a neighbor extends to forty houses in every direction (front, back, left, and right). This establishes a massive, cohesive, and caring community.

Regardless of Faith

The rights of neighbors in Islam apply universally. A neighbor who is not a Muslim still has the rights of a neighbor. If they are Muslim, they have two rights (neighbor + Muslim brother). If they are relatives, they have three.

Sharing Gifts

The Prophet ﷺ encouraged neighbors to exchange gifts, even something as simple as a sheep's trotter. He said: "Exchange gifts, as that will lead to increasing your love for one another."
