The Festival of Breaking the Fast

A day of immense joy, gratitude, and reward after a month of fasting in Ramadan.

Don't Forget Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana): It is an obligation (Fard) upon every Muslim who has the means to pay Zakat al-Fitr before the Eid prayer begins. It is intended to purify the fasting person from idle talk and to feed the poor so they may also enjoy the day of Eid.

The Sunnahs of Eid al-Fitr

Performing Ghusl (ritual bath) before going to prayer

Eating an odd number of dates before leaving the house

Wearing your best, clean clothes and applying perfume (itr)

Reciting Takbeer out loud on the way to the Musallah

Taking a different route home after the Eid prayer

Greeting others with "Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum"

What Does Eid al-Fitr Mean?

"Eid" means a recurring festival or celebration, and "Fitr" means breaking the fast. Eid al-Fitr is the first of two canonical festivals in Islam (the other being Eid al-Adha). It marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan. It falls on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.

Is It Permissible to Fast on Eid?

No. It is strictly forbidden (Haram) to fast on the day of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. These are days of eating, drinking, and expressing gratitude to Allah. The Prophet ï·º said: "These are days of eating, drinking, and remembering Allah."
