Animal Slaughter (Zabiha) Rules Guide
Understand the strict conditions required to make meat permissible (Halal) to eat in Islam.
Islamic FiqhThe 4 Conditions of Zabiha
The Slaughterer Must Be a Believer
The person performing the slaughter must be a sane adult Muslim, or from the People of the Book (Ahlul-Kitab - Jews/Christians), provided they also follow the rules of invoking God's name and slaughtering properly.
Invoking the Name of Allah (Tasmiyah)
The slaughterer must say "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar" (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest) immediately before cutting the throat. If the name of anyone other than Allah is mentioned, the meat becomes strictly Haram.
A Supremely Sharp Knife
The knife used must be extremely sharp so that the cut is instantaneous. The Prophet ï·º commanded: "When you slaughter, slaughter well. Let one of you sharpen his blade and let him comfort his animal." The knife must not be sharpened in front of the animal.
Severing the Four Passages
The cut must swiftly sever at least three out of the four main passages in the neck: the trachea (windpipe), the esophagus (food pipe), and the two jugular veins. The spinal cord must NOT be cut, as this paralyzes the animal and prevents the heart from pumping out the blood.
The Great Debate: Hand vs. Machine Slaughter
In modern times, commercial poultry farms process thousands of chickens an hour. This has led to the controversial practice of machine slaughter.
Hand Slaughter (Zabiha)
This is the traditional, universally accepted method by all scholars of Islam.
- A Muslim manually holds the chicken.
- They recite "Bismillah" for every single animal.
- They cut the neck by hand with a knife.
Machine Slaughter
Used by mass-market "Halal" brands to speed up production.
- Chickens are hung upside down on a moving conveyor belt.
- A pre-recorded tape plays "Bismillah", or a Muslim presses a button once to start the machine saying "Bismillah".
- A rotating mechanical blade cuts the necks as they pass by.
