The 25 Prophets (Anbiya) in the Quran

In Islam, believing in all the Prophets and Messengers sent by Allah is a fundamental pillar of faith (Iman). The Quran states that Allah sent a warner to every nation throughout history, meaning there were thousands of Prophets. However, the Quran explicitly mentions 25 Prophets by name.

Prophets (Nabi) vs. Messengers (Rasul)

All 25 figures listed above are Prophets (Anbiya). However, some of them were also given the higher rank of Messenger (Rusul). A Prophet is one who receives divine revelation, but a Messenger is a Prophet who is additionally given a new Sharia (law) or scripture to deliver to his people (e.g., Musa with the Torah, 'Isa with the Injeel, Muhammad with the Quran).

Ulul-'Azm (The Possessors of Strong Will)

Among the 25 Prophets, five are distinguished with the title Ulul-'Azm (The Possessors of Steadfastness) due to the immense trials they faced and their extraordinary patience. They are:

  1. Prophet Nuh (Noah): Preached for 950 years with immense patience.
  2. Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham): Known as the Khalil (Friend) of Allah.
  3. Prophet Musa (Moses): The most mentioned Prophet in the Quran (136 times).
  4. Prophet 'Isa (Jesus): Supported with profound miracles by the Holy Spirit.
  5. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: The Seal of the Prophets, sent to all of humanity.

Why is Musa mentioned the most?

You may notice from the list above that Prophet Musa (Moses) is mentioned far more times (136) than any other Prophet, including Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (who is mentioned by name only 4 times). This is because the trials of the Children of Israel, the tyranny of Pharaoh, and the struggles of Musa were deeply relevant to the early Muslims facing similar persecution from the Quraysh in Mecca. It provided them with historical precedence, patience, and hope.
