What are E-Numbers?

E-numbers are codes for substances used as food additives, commonly found on food labels throughout the European Union, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. The "E" stands for "Europe".

Understanding the Categories

Halal E-Numbers

These additives are derived from plants, minerals, or microbial sources. They do not contain any animal products or alcohol, making them 100% safe to consume for Muslims.

Haram E-Numbers

These are exclusively derived from pigs, insects, or involve alcohol in their base composition. E120 (Carmine) and E441 (Gelatin from pigs) are the most common examples.

Mushbooh (Doubtful)

These additives, like E471, can be made from plant fat (Halal) OR animal fat (Haram if not Zabiha). If the packaging does not specifically say "Suitable for Vegetarians", it is safer to avoid.
